NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity marks 2,000th day on Red Planet

The NASA Curiosity rover has completed 2000 days on Mars, following the footsteps of its bigger brother, the Opportunity, that has been on the Red Planet for 5000 days. NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity has now marked 2,000 days on the red planet. That’s 2,000 days by Martian standards. A Martian sol, or solar day, is equivalent to 24 hours, 39 minutes and 35 seconds. So 2,000 days on Mars equal 2,055 days here on Earth. Either way, it’s a big milestone this week for scientists eager for Curiosity to begin…

‘AI to help unravel mystery of human brain’

BOSTON: Scientists are using emerging artificial intelligence (AI) networks to enhance their understanding of one of the most elusive intelligence systems: the human brain. The researchers are learning much about the role of contextual clues in human image recognition. By using artificial neurons – essentially lines of code, software – with neural network models, they can parse out the various elements that go into recognising a specific place or object. “The fundamental questions cognitive neuroscientists and computer scientists seek to answer are similar,” said Aude Oliva from the Massachusetts Institute of…

NASA plans to launch next planet hunter on April 16

NASA is ready to send the next planet-hunting spacecraft, called TESS, which will be launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. NASA is targeting April 16 for the launch of its next planet-hunting spacecraft on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Prior to the launch of the mission, Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the US space agency on Tuesday said it would reveal more about the mission at a media event on March 28. Mars’ oceans formed much earlier than thought: Study

A new study estimates that oceans appeared on Mars’ surface earlier than previously thought, a fact that could hasten the search for water on the Red Planet. Oceans on Mars formed several hundred million years earlier and were not as deep as once thought, according to a study. Researchers at The University of California, Berkeley in the US have linked the existence of oceans early in the history of Mars to the rise of the solar system’s largest volcanic system, Tharsis. They also highlight the key role played by global…
